Tamil Movie Kadhal Kadhai Picture
According to a report published by The Hindu, over 50 Tamil remake films are lined up for its release this year. In Tamil cinema, it's a season of Mallu movies. Going by the latest trend, Malayalam remakes are hot now in the Tamil circuit. More than exploring various genres, actors are ready to pick remakes scripts that will work for them. An appalling fact is that how the Malayalam film industry, which only caters to 3 per cent of Indian population, is able to churn out National Award-winning films every year.

Though Malayalam remakes such as Manichithrathazhu (Chandramukhi in Tamil), Drishyam (Papanasam) and How Old Are You (36 Vayathinile), became a sensation upon release, the futility of remakes were apparent in some of the films. Here's a look at some of the remakes that shouldn't have been done:
Bodyguard (2010) - Kavalan (2011)
Bodyguard-Kaavalan
In Malayalam, actor Dileep played the role of a bodyguard in the film. Often known for his witty one-liners and comical roles, Bodyguard was a blockbuster when it released. However, the Tamil remake had Ilayathalapathy Vijay reprising Dileep's role in the film. The film tells the story of a bodyguard, who sets off on a mission to protect his idol from the threat he had received. Though Vijay received praise for his charisma and not for his larger-than-life image, one couldn't quite buy the film's subject.
Traffic (2011) - Chennaiyil Oru Naal (2013)
Traffic-Chennaiyil Oru Naal
A multi-narrative thriller that intertwines multiple stories around one particular incident, the film is inspired from an actual event that happened in Chennai. The Malayalam version was a super hit when it released. Despite living up to its expectation, the Tamil version failed to fare at the box office.
22 Female Kottayam (2012) - Malini 22 Palayamkottai (2014)
22 Female Kottayam-Malini Female Kottayam
The film is based on the journey of Tessa, who gets raped by a travel agent Cyril and the rest of the story tells how Tessa regains her dignity. 22 Female Kottayam received wide acclaim for breaking down the cliches of a misogynistic society. The Tamil version had Nithya Menon playing the protagonist and the film bombed at the box office.
Bangalore Days (2014) - Bangalore Naatkal (2016)
Bangalore Days-Bangalore Naatkal
This is probably the worst remake that has been directed so far. In the original, Anjali Menon's script was superb that the film was laced with solid characters. An uncompromising performance by the lead actors such as Nivin Pauly, Dulquer, Fahadh, Parvathi and Naziya lifted the scope of the film and it earned the cult status among fans. The Tamil version too was true to the original only if the director had given proper attention to the script and the casting.
Thattathin Marayathu (2012) - Meendum Oru Kadhal Kathai (2016)
Thattathin Marayathu-Meendum Oru Kadhal Kathai
Adding to the list is the latest Tamil film Meendum Oru Kadhal Kathai, which is the remake of Thattathin Marayathu. Based on the love story between a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl, the film portrayed how the difference in their religion acting as a barrier in their marriage. Apart from an usual love story, Thattathin marayathu received laurels from the critics primarily for its lead actors played by actors Nivin Pauly and Isha Talwar. Now, the Tamil remake which hit the screens on August 26, failed to impress the audience unlike its original.
